General Info for Department of MUSIC
Founded in 1948 as an academic research institute for music with museum. At the beginning, the staff (unsalaried) included two academicians: Petko Staynov and Andrey Stojanov. First director: acad. Petko Staynov; first full time research fellow: Ivan Katchulev (since 1950).
Initially, the institute consisted of two departments: for music folklore
and for academic researches and publications. Over the years prominent Bulgarian
scholars have worked in the institute: Raina Katzarova, Elena Stoin, Nikolai
Kaufman, Andrey Andreev, Venelin Krustev, Stojan Stojanov, Todor Djidjev,
Todor Todorov, Agapia Balareva, Gencho Gaytandjiev, Elena Kuteva, Svetlana
Neicheva, Bozhidar Spasov, Michail Bukureshtliev, Vergilij Atanasov, Liljana
Vitanova-Staleva, Anna Ilieva, Violeta Konsulova, Ilia Manolov, Leon Moskona,
Dimitrina Kaufman.

Music Department conducts PhD students in different academic areas including
music folklore, medieval, art, popular, electronic and computer music, music
theater, cognitive musicology, sociology and psychology of music. Doctor candidates
develop independent research projects counting on all institutes’ facilities.
They are encouraged to take part in various academic initiatives: discussions,
seminars, conferences, research expeditions, group research projects, publications,
etc.
